The Three Holy Hierarchies

The Three Holy Hierarchies are mentioned as three eminent saints and theologians of the Christian religion, protectors of literature and education. Their names are John Chrysostom, Basil the Great and Gregory of Nazianzus or Gregory the Theologian.

Their wisdom and their actions gave them the title of the "maximum luminaries" as the troparion goes "The Three Maximum Luminaries of the Triune Godhead".

They showed commitment to the Christian religion and their lives were the example of that struggle.

Both their writings and their oral teaching gave glory to the Christian Religion and Education.

Their profound understanding of religion and excellent command of Greek civilazation offered the basis for the formulation of the Greek Christian education and culture.
For their great contribution to literature they were proclaimed protectors of education.

For their wisdom and Christian life the Orthodox Church named them Saints and celebrate each individual.Because of a disagreement among Christians about which of the Three offered the most,
a joint celebration was decided on 30th January every year.
