Film Preview by Fotini Zaharaki

Last week, I saw two films at the cinema; "Asterix and Obelix", a cartoon and "Spiderman", an adventure. The music was better in "Asterix and Obelix" than in "Spiderman", but "Spiderman" was more interesting. The acting was very good in both films, but the special effects in the adventure film weren't as good as in the cartoon. The tickets were cheaper for the adventure film than for the cartoon. I think I liked "Asterix and Obelix" more than "Spiderman".

One Man's Trash - See the shadows!

But is it art? Tim Nobel and Sue Webster take piles of trash and make art
into them... but sometimes the art isn't apparent until you see it in a
different light. Isn't this amazing?

JUNIOR CLASS IS BEING CREATIVE! CONGRATULATIONS TO THEM AND THEIR TEACHER FOR THE GOOD WORK THEY DO! KEEP IT UP..

Evaggelia Kokoni from Junior class was very kind to offer this wonderful paper basket to her classmates and teachers! In the basket she had little stripes of paper with her classmates' names written on. Amazing, isn't it? Bravo Evaggelia!!!

This one is by Despina Kokoni and the one below is by Evaggelia again!

Well done girls!

OUR TREE PROJECT

My dearest students!

Do you remember our tree project that most of you wrote your names on when we got the blessing (αγιασμός) on the 14th Sept?

Well, here are your leaf-names on the Willpower Tree! Can you make out your handwriting? For those who forgot to do so, that's ok! You can still see your classmates's names.Stay tuned as the same project will be published in different forms in the next few weeks. Should I say in a form of modern art? Or more stylistic maybe?
Check for yourself!

A NEW WAY OF LOOKING AT THINGS

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: 'I'm blind, please help.' There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognised his footsteps and asked: 'Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?'

The man said: 'I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.' What had the man written? Can you have a guess?

Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

MORAL OF THE STORY
Be thankful for what you have! Be creative! Be innovative! Think differently and positively!

Invite others towards good with wisdom. When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile. Handle your present with confidence. Keep the faith and drop the fear. The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling! And even more beautiful is knowing that you are the reason behind it!!!

PROJECT BY C.FRAGGOS, G. VASILIOU AND M. TSINIA ON ASPIRIN

ASPIRIN

Aspirin (USAN), also known as acetylsalicylic acid (pronounced /əˌsɛtɪlsælɪˌsɪlɪk ˈæsɪd/, abbreviated ASA), is a salicylate drug, often used as an analgesic to relieve minor aches and pains, as an antipyretic to reduce fever, and as an anti-inflammatory medication.

Main article: History of aspirinA French chemist, Charles Frederic Gerhardt, was the first to prepare acetylsalicylic acid in 1853. In the course of his work on the synthesis and properties of various acid anhydrides, he mixed acetyl chloride with a sodium salt of salicylic acid (sodium salicylate). A vigorous reaction ensued, and the resulting melt soon solidified. Since no structural theory existed at that time, Gerhardt called the compound he obtained "salicylic-acetic anhydride" . This preparation of aspirin was one of the many reactions Gerhardt conducted for his paper on anhydrides and he did not pursue it further.

SIDE EFFECTS AND THERAPIC USE

Although aspirin has been used to combat fever and pains associated with common cold for more than 100 years, only recently its efficacy was confirmed in controlled clinical trials on adults. 1 g of aspirin, on average, reduced the oral body temperature from 39.0°C to 37.6°C after 3 hours. The relief began after 30 minutes, and after 6 hours the temperature still remained below 37.8°C. Aspirin also helped with "achiness", discomfort and headache, and with sore throat pain, for those who had it.

Aspirin was indistinguishable from paracetamol in any respect, except for, possibly, slightly higher rate of sweating and gastrointestinal side effects. Aspirin is one of the first-line drugs used in the treatment of migraine, bringing relief in 50–60% of the cases. It is as effective as a newer triptan medication sumatriptan (Imitrex) and other painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. The combination of aspirin, paracetamol and caffeine is even more potent. For the treatment of migraine headache, this formulation works better than any of its three components taken separately.

Aspirin alleviates pain in 60-75% patients with episodic tension headache. It is equivalent to paracetamol in that respect, except for the higher frequency of gastrointestinal side effects. The combination of aspirin, paracetamol and caffeine is still more effective, but at the cost of more stomach discomfort, nervousness and dizziness.

It is also effective for pain after surgery. The most studied example is pain after a tooth extraction, for which the highest allowed dose of aspirin (1 g) is equivalent to 1 g of paracetamol. Combination of aspirin and caffeine, generally, affords greater pain relief than aspirin alone. Effervescent aspirin alleviates pain much faster than aspirin in tablets (15-30 min vs. 45-60 min). Nevertheless, as a post-surgery painkiller, aspirin is inferior to ibuprofen. Aspirin has higher gastrointestinal toxicity than ibuprofen. The maximum dose of aspirin (1 g) provides weaker pain relief than an intermediate dose of ibuprofen (400 mg), and this relief does not last as long.

IN THE LIMELIGHT THIS WEEK PARIS HILTON RETRIEVES JEWELRY STOLEN BY BURGLARY GANG!!!!

Paris Hilton, who was burglarized last year of an estimated $2 million in jewelry, has gotten most of her valuables returned by the LAPD, her rep confirms. "Paris went to the police station last night to retrieve her stolen belongings," her publicist Dawn Miller tells us. "She didn't get everything but fortunately most of her jewelry was returned. She is really pleased and thankful to the LAPD for their help." Hilton, 28, is one of a string of celebrity victims of an alleged burglary gang comprised of mostly teenagers. Suspect Rachel J. Lee, 19, who detectives believe is the ringleader, was arrested in Las Vegas Thursday, and remains in custody. Lee had an apparent fascination with celebrity fashion, a source close to the case tells us. The crime ring is also believed to be responsible for the recent break-ins at the homes of Lindsay Lohan, Audrina Patridge and Orlando Bloom. It remains unclear whether the gang was responsible for other recent burglary victims, which include Rachel Bilson, Hayden Panettiere and Kourtney Kardashian. Other suspects arrested in a sting operation Thursday include Courtney Ames, 18, Diana Tamayo, 19, Alexis Neirs, 18, and Roy Lopez, 27. Nicholas Prugo, 18, was arrested last month and has been formally accused of the Lohan and Patridge burglaries. Reached for comment, Prugo's attorney Sean G. Erenstoft stated: "I commend the LAPD for apprehending the major culprits in these capers, and I'm confident that Mr. Prugo will be found to have had a limited role in this case. We're pleased that stolen property is being returned to its rightful owners." Ames and Neirs have been released after posting $50,000 bail each.

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

20% of the world's population consumes 80% of the planet's resources

GEO4 UNEP (UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME ) 2007

REVIEWS OF THE WEEK BY THE PROFICIENCY CLASS

''HOME is a hymn to our planet and to our species, designed to be shared everywhere and by everyone. It opens possibilities and shows that ways to change the world do exist. We still have forests, mammal life, oceans to protect. It's our responsibility to protect these formidable resources.

Ecology is not only a desire to protect the Earth. It is a way of seeing the world! I am inclined to believe that HOME is a forceful project designed to raise awareness across the widest audience possible. It provides a different angle from which to look at old problems under a new light!''

By Vassia Liakopoulou,
Proficiency class

**********

''The miracle of life is a stunning theory! What made a real impression on me while watching the movie was to hear that the human race has brought great changes to our planet. Most of them have a negative impact and they do not support the living forms of life. Nevertheless, people become aware of the dangers and start to be concerned in an attempt to save our planet.''

By Chris Fraggos,
Proficiency class

**********

''The film gives us a complete view of how beautiful the Earth is and what human beings have caused -and are still causing to it. The natural sceneries are breathtaking. The videos show a vast range of primates, some of which are very hard to capture.

Through HOME I got to know the importance of the natural balance in our lives! People have damaged our planet to such an extent that our lives are in serious jeopardy. The movie also suggests alternative sources of energy that could slightly improve the situation.

It is my firm belief that this documentary can affect people's lifestyle and make our planet a worth living place!

SONG OF THE WEEK!

Ska-p is ska punk band from the working-class Vallecas neighborhood in Madrid, Spain. Intifada is a song from the band's fifth album ''Que Cora La Voz!'' It refers to the revolution of the Palestenians. There are 2 Intifadas. The First (1987-1991) was a Palestinian uprising against Israeli rule in the Palestenian territories and the Second was a period of intensified Palestenian-Israeli violence which began in late September 2000.In fact, this song talks about the unpleasant situations these people were forced to endure and the death of million of innocent local citizens. Additionally, it presents how awful it is to be kicked out of your own home, prevent you from protesting and eradicate your culture. However, they don't gine up and they keep trying to resist to war, racism and unjustice...

Lyrics:

Ohh Intifada, Intifada

Ohh Intifada, intifada
Ohh Intifada, liberación! (2x)

Lyrics in English:

Six million Jews
Annihilated in the manner most cruel,
An imperialist genocide by the fascist armies.
You must understand history.
The victims have become executioners,
Switching roles,
Colonizing Palestinian territories, against all common sense.

Dead, dead!
In whose name?
Dead, dead!
In the name of Israel.
Dead, dead!
In whose name?
Dead, dead!

What would you do if someone kicked you out of home,
Giving you no right to protest,
Trampling on your culture,
And you were plunged into madness by the loss of dignity?
Palestine in exile suffers
The opulence of Israel
For an all-powerful government
Prepared for war
By you know whom.

Dead, dead!
In whose name?
Dead, dead!
In the name of Israel.
Dead, dead!
In whose name?
Dead, dead!

Stones against bullets
A new intifada
In the West Bank, Gaza, or Jerusalem.
Who could imagine
That David would become Goliath? (x2)
Intifada, intifada, intifada — liberation!

Don’t get me wrong,
Nor do I differentiate people
By their race, culture, or religion .
I only condemn oppression,
Injustice, and
The abuse of power.
Palestine is subjected to
The toughest wars,
The opulence of Israel.

Dead, dead!
In whose name?
Dead, dead!
In the name of Israel.
Dead, dead!
In whose name?
Dead, dead!

Stones against bullets
A new intifada
In the West Bank, Gaza, or Jerusalem.
Who could imagine
That David would become Goliath?
Who could imagine(x4)
Intifada, intifada, intifada — liberation! (x2)

For those who are interested in hearing the song, search for it in 'you tube' under the title Intifada.

CALL IT A JOKE

A bus driver on his route sees a van from the zoo stranded on the side of the road. The zoo worker offers the bus driver $100 to help him deliver two dozen penguins. The bus driver agrees and loads the penguins on the bus.

An hour later, the zoo worker gets his van fixed and heads to the zoo. On the road, he sees the bus driver and the penguins driving in the opposite direction. He catches up to the bus and pulls them over.

The zoo worker yells, "I gave you a $100 to take the penguins to the zoo for me. Why are you still driving them around?"

"Calm down," the bus driver says, "I took the penguins to the zoo. We had change left over, so now I'm taking them to the movies."

IN THE LIMELIGHT

Lindsay Lohan was due in court on 16.10.09.
Although it is not known why the actress has been ordered by a judge in Beverly Hills, California, to appear it is rumoured she is not complying with a court ordered alcohol education course.
Lindsay, 23, was ordered to take the course as part of her three-year probation for a charge of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) in 2007.
Gossip website TMZ claims sources running the education course contacted the court about Lindsay's conduct and that she has been "outright violating the terms of the programme".
The court order was made during a routine progress report on Wednesday (14.10.09). Records show no warrant has been issued, suggesting it is unlikely a probation violation has occurred.
However, if the judge determines Lindsay has violated the terms of the programme, her probation could be revoked and she could be jailed.
Lindsay's father, Michael Lohan, has raised his concerns about his daughter, saying he thinks she is addicted to prescription drugs and is planning to stage an intervention and force her to get professional help.
He said: "I'm going to get her off the prescription drugs that she's on. I hate it when people talk about illegal drug abuse because it's not just drinking and illegal drugs that kill you.
"Prescription drugs can destroy and kill a person and are sometimes harder to stop."
Lindsay famously served just 84 minutes behind bars in 2007 before being placed on probation after pleading guilty to two counts of being under the influence of cocaine, and no contest to two counts of drunken driving and one count of reckless driving.

EVENTS AT WILLPOWER

On Thursday 15th, the Proficiency class and Mrs Efi watched 'HOME' at the premises of our school. For those who haven't got a clue what this is, HOME is a documentary which went truly global and was brought out for free!It was on at the cinemas all around the world on the same day a couple of months ago to make us act and react in favour of the protection of our planet.

How about some facts and figures about the film? The shooting schedule added up to 54 countries,217 days'shooting and 488 hours of footage! Three film crews worked simultaneously for 21 months in all four corners of the Earth. It's the first ever movie that is 100% aerial footage!

There are the pictures. There's the text. And then there's the music, which accompanies, flies, reveals emotions. It lends movement to the pictures of the film and the emotion that its vision provokes is exacerbated by the soundtrack. Just stunning!

The movie shows the genious of human beings and their ability to adapt to their environment...or to adapt it. And the big question is, 'How do we choose to exploit our genious?''

Let's just think about it!!!

In brief, the Prof students and myself absolutely enjoyed the documentary as much as the pizza we had! ;)
